Thanks Tom. I received mine yesterday after your recommendation and it's definitely light and comfortable. But I cannot understand how this could have an R-value of 3.8 when it has zero insulation whatsoever. Not even a single sheet of mylar or metalised film. I've tested it on my tiled floor at home for an hour and while I did manage to fall asleep on it, I didn't exactly feel warm. I'll have to get it out and test propertly to see how it performs in the wild. Might just be a summer pad for me.

Great video and I agree with your conclusion. I spent a night in durston xmid solid in a very exposed place on a finnish fjell when a storm hit during the night. Apparently the gusts were over 44 mph. Was a very scary experience and I was certain the tent wouldt last it, but it did, which i think is a small miracle. Never brining xmid to a terrain like that again.

It would be interesting to know your height & weight. The Kilos pad appeals to larger bodies as there is less chance of rolling off compared to 'cut down' pads. As long as it will fit in the tent.

I’m on my second Scarp 1 (both silnylon ones). I wish I had got the carbon fibre pole. While I appreciate the advantages of the Ultra fabric, I prefer the muted colour of the silnylon one. I’ve had both my old and new Scarp out in bad conditions and they’ve always felt very solid. It’s a great design. It has enough room but is still compact. As you say, two vestibules is great. Unless weight is crucial, it’s still the best one person tent on the market IMO.

So, wait... did you learn anything about the warmth of the pad? You talked about everything else except that! Perhaps you hinted that the R 3.8 rating was approximately correct, but you didn't say it. The reason we wonder is because the Nemo Tensor Extreme's supposed R 7.8 is not consistent with the actual (lesser) warmth of the pad. Klymit's rating are also generally considered to be "overly optimistic". Maybe Paria as well. It appears that pads can somehow test well in the ASTM test, but under-perform in the field. Therefore we are skeptical about ASTM R-value ratings.

I did talk about the pad warmth.. It was a simple video and not a review which I did explain.. I showed the temperature of 5 degrees on my Garmin, mentioned the weather forecast temperature and stated that I was comfortable. I also gave reference to the sleeping bag and tent which also affect warmth.. But I am sorry if this didn't come across as you expected.. best wishes Tom

Looks great. Although I'd be more interested in an Inspire 1.5 or something, targeted at a solo backpacker and bringing down the weight just a bit more. I also don't understand how Samaya gets a minimum weight of 1.2 kg for this tent.

  • @_Chris390
    @_Chris390 2 дні тому

I think the Hogback looks like a great option. Yes it's 1900g with the alu pole, but it's also Sil-Poly (Tarptent's only Scarp-style tent in that fabric), and it has a lower solid part of the semi-solid inner, which allows even more ventilation than the Scarp 1 and 2, but still offers some protection. Also with a 218 x 218cm interior, there is loads of space for two or three people on wide pads, plus gear. Only downside is the vestibules are small, and like every other new tent these days it has magnetic door ties, instead of toggles, unfortunately. Obviously overkill for one person, but for someone who can only afford one tent and wants to use it with a partner, family, or friends, as well as on their own, I think it looks perfect.

Looks like a half decent pad. Ground temperatures are fairly warm at this time of year, I wonder how it would cope with a 5c test in spring where the ground temperature could be a fair bit colder? Looks very similar to the Sea to Summit Etherlite pads which are known to be very comfortable (although prone to cold spots).

    • @garynesbitt5078

@@DiabloOutdoors yeah I’ve owned the original xthem which is 2 inches thick and the new NXT is 3 inches thick but they cost around 220 and 250 respectively and are in the 7 R value region. I currently own a nemo tensor extreme which is 3.5 inches thick and has 8.5 R value but costs about 280. All these pads are 4 season and between 680 and 700g. I also own an uberlite which is 2 inches thick with a 2.3 R value but cost 220 and weighs 320g in long wide. This kilos pad is marketed as ultralight which I suppose it is setting aside the now discontinued uberlite. I still don’t know of anything else in the market that (on paper) offers what it does. That said real world doesn’t always marry up to paper stats as an example the big Agnes zoom ul doesn’t sleep anywhere near its claimed 4.5 R value. Thickness doesn’t always mean comfort but it’s definitely a significant contributor to it. The direct competition to this pad is all 3.5 inch thick or less that I am aware of. So I still can’t think of anything that directly compares. Sleeping pads really are a minefield unless you know exactly what your requirements are!

Great video Tom, having used euston cyclone carbon poles on an access 2 tent (if tarp poles are the same) there durability was poor and at the time it was an issue for many on forums. I have sections replaced under the warentee due to ends splitting, and then one snapped under 20mph wind. Your poles may be a different material, or possibly construction has changed, but it's worth keeping in mind.

While I do agree that "4 season" is perhaps not the best term, it is the language used in winter camping/mountaineering world and it is just one of those we have to accept. Hi Tom, Another great video. I wonder if you could help... I know you really rate the Scarp 1 and Abisko Lite 2, where would this rank among them? I have an xmid and Storm Star for summer and then harsher conditions. What I'm after is that 'inbetween' tent. I don't feel the xmid is great (I know others do) in high winds/summits and the storm star is a bit of a chunk sometimes and a bit over kill so I'm wondering what you're tent of choice would be for spring/autumn. Our weather now is pretty much windy at most times of the year so something which handles wind well and doesn't take up too much space in the bag is what I'm after (I think?!) Thanks again for all your videos, some of the best out there!

Hi, thank you for the comment... Honestly I cannot give you this detail on a comment but here is some info... . The Scarp 1 and Abisko Lite 2 are much more winter tents and way too many pros and cons of each to try and detail here... I have reviewed all these tents and that gives you lots of detail and you then need to decide based on your preferences regarding features... The Samaya here has great ventilation, amazing build quality, space and low weight for these characteristics... I cant rank it because it depends on what features you value.. The Scarp will be stronger but less space, but longer pack size... The Abisko Lite 2 only one vestibule but a bigger one... I will be doing a tent awards video in about a month and comparing a number of tents but not all of them.....I hope this helps... Tom

Available in any color as long as it's pink. One plus is that you can't get the inner wet as there isn't one. You will have checked the weather , but a newbie may camp in 30mph winds in a 3 season tent, be happy how well their tent is doing; but come night, the winds get stronger and stronger, the gale force winds becoming hurricane force. If ontop of a mountain, at night, there is no escape, the tent is going down. Been there, done that.

Yes I have bailed a few times in the past... The weather forecasts now are much better but many people dont check them or use them to their advantage.. At least on my channel I do lots of measured wind testing for those that are interested or appreciate the value of it... hey great to hear from you and happy camping.. Tom

Hey Tom. Really sorry I couldn’t make that camp. Tent looks really spacious for I understand around 1.6kg. The vestibules make a big difference especially in our weather; something I do miss in the Assaut 2 as a permanent feature. As you know I’ve had the Assaut 2 out in measured constant 50mph wind and I was genuinely taken aback by how strong it was; comparable if not better than my Hilleberg Jannu for sheer structural rigidity. So I really do rate the build quality and attention to detail on Samaya tents. As you say they have a special feel about them. This Inspire model looks like it could handle most UK 4 season weather apart from very strong winds or snow loading. Looking fwd to seeing it in person 👍

I'm not sure the '3-season'/'4-season' thing is that helpful any more (if it ever was). In our hills we can experience winter conditions year round (heavy snow and ice possibly excepted). I'd rather see a grading system based on weather instead of season - that's probably what many of us subconsciously do anyway.

Hi David, thank you for sharing your thoughts.. I think we are such a long way off having some sort of measured system... its just so unregulated... 3 or 4 season ratings IMO are linked to the typical conditions normally expected with that time of year... best wishes and thank you once again for sharing your thoughts.. Tom.

These decisions are very use case specific. For my use, the Nammatj is the choice for one person. First, I am 72 and I am much less flexible than I was as a younger man. The roominess of the tent is critical for me. The Nammatj is very rugged and sufficiently wind resistant for my needs. The weight is fine because I am almost always paddling when I am using the tent, not carrying it on my back. I trust the heavier fabrics. Trust is key for me because I am often in very remote places where a tent failure can be life threatening. I use three or four man tents for two people. Keron is my favorite. Again, we are not carrying the tents on our backs. Great video.

Hi Tom, I’m a big fan of your reviews and have found the information you provide incredibly helpful in the past. I actually bought 3 of these mats for group trips based on your review and others, but particularly yours. I was surprised when I received the mats to see just how poor the construction is. Seams of uneven width, messy injection moulding at the valves, very poor quality bags. But above all I think the material used seems to be the same as you would have for a pool lilo/beach toy. I am certain that it will be highly susceptible to puncture and the overall quality doesn't suggest confidence in any way shape or form (and nor does the singular tiny repair patch!) I have used NeoAir Xtherms for the past 10 years, I have 7 in all, and over time and the harsh use of groups they have had tiny repairable leaks. I also had one where the baffles joined up, that was replaced without question. So as you say no mat is perfect. But there is also no doubt that the neoair mats are in a completely different league when I comes to quality of construction and materials and I feel like not mentioning that here was an oversight. Is the kilosgear mat more comfortable? Yes, a bit and particularly for sidesleepers (like me) on hard ground. But honestly I could never see myself trusting these on a multiday trip so I will be returning them. I suspect that kilosgear is basically a drop shipping company selling very cheap mass-produced Chinese goods. One indication of this is that inside the pillow cover the inflatable component appears to be of superior materials to the mat, indicating to me a separate supplier. To be honest the more I think about this the more I wonder if they didn't just send you a different (and better) mat to he three I received! Anyway do keep up the otherwise excellent reviews. You have created an excellent resource.

Hi Alex, sorry for the delay in my reply but I was actually on a camp when I picked up this comment.. Thank for the way in which you presented it.... I just haven't honestly had the same experience that you have.. I dont want to challenge you or just counter bit by bit what you have said. Mine and the other two Kilos Gear pads have great build quality... I will admit that the material feels plasticky but if this makes it easier to glue or bond and then work reliable long term then I am happy with that especially at this price point.. An XtHERM retails at £272 for the regular wide max the last time I looked and as you know they still suffer problems... I did not mention quality issues between the two mats because I didn't see any apart from the material feeling better on the XTherm and this may have or have not a functional difference... I really hope you can get a satisfactory outcome and I am sorry for the time you will have spent sorting this out... I have actually forwarded your comment to Kilos gear for their attention so we will see how that pans out... best wishes and than you again for you thought in this approach... Tom

@@TOMHEANEY100 thanks for the reply Tom and again the very pleasant way you responded. Kilos Gear have already processed the refund apparently (I suppose I wont know for sure until I have the payment, but I have no reason to be suspicious) and so that at least is excellent. My suspicion is that these will be much more vulnerable than the XTherms, but obviously, I haven't tested them. I am surprised you don't see quality issues in the manufacture though. The valves on mine for example are very poorly made - the plastic hasn't conformed fully to its mould shape. The welds around the outer seam are also inconsistent. Anyway there is no doubt this is a difficult market sector - we now want the earth! A thick, light, wide, comfortable, packable, warm affordable mattress with no long term issues with leaks and puncture resistant materials. Its no wonder, as you say, that all brands have problems!

Hi Alex, Kilos gear have got back to me with a detailed response and very quickly as usual.. I will now copy some of it here for your attention....This is from my contact at kilos Gear 'Regarding the issues that were pointed out, I’ll be taking this feedback to our production team immediately. To be honest, we rarely receive this kind of feedback, but that doesn’t mean we’ll dismiss it-we take it very seriously. It’s possible that we’ve overlooked something in this batch. It’s also possible that we haven’t established the best channels for customers to provide detailed feedback, or that after a refund, some customers simply don’t have the time to share their experience. Either way, we’ll get to the bottom of this.' 'If there are still concerns about the product’s performance, we’re more than happy to offer them a full refund. At the same time, we’d love for them to keep the products free of charge and continue testing them over the long term. Their feedback has been incredibly helpful, and we’d really appreciate any additional insights they may have after more extensive use.' 'if they, or anyone else from your audience, ever need assistance, feel free to direct them to our customer support team at hello@kilosgear.com. We’ll make sure they’re well taken care of and that any concerns are addressed smoothly. I hope this helps and every best wish... Tom
